Sensory Integration Intervention (SII) for Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Introduction Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and relevant developmental disorders are often likely to reveal different patterns of sensory processing to their peers and others with special educational needs (SEN). It is estimated that 60 to 70 percent of children with ASD present with sensory modulation/processing disorder. Sensory overload can present itself in many ways, such as challenging behaviour, withdrawal and complete shutdown. There are, though, a number of simple strategies that can be used at home or classroom to effectively add the sensory filters; Occupational therapists are the key to this intervention. Adding the right interventions to target each sensory system helps the child’s nervous system become more organized and therefore assists the child to improve performance. Objectives of the course After successful completion, the participants will be able to: • Understand sensory modulation and discrimination disorders • Comprehend functions of Vestibular, Proprioceptive and Tactile system • Assess sensory systems properly • Manage sensory systems efficiently Course Structure The course is designed with lectures and interactive sessions with special focus on hands-on training. It is a 2 daylong course which will begin at 9:00 am and will close by 5:00 pm. Target Participants Bachelor in Clinical Occupational Therapy. Facilitators Lead Facilitaor: Manish Samnani is a Certified Sensory Integration Therapist from University of Southern California and Certified Neuro-Developmental Therapist from NDTA USA. He received Gold Medal for academic excellence for Masters in Occupational Therapy, Pediatrics by Smt. Sonia Gandhi. He is the founder and managing director of SOCH based in India which is dedicated to children with special needs. Also he is heading and consulting various renowned institutions in India like Max Hospital, Children First, ACE and Salwan School etc. Mr. Samnani is engaged in teaching postgraduate students and research work since 2005 with many publications. He has been conducting training workshops in several schools, hospitals, conferences at home and abroad. Course fee The course fee is Taka Five Thousand (5000) only. How to Pay? The preferred method of payment is Online using Credit or Debit Card or Mobile Banking (e.g. BKash, DBBL, MCash, MY Cash). However, participants can also make payment directly to Technical Training Unit at icddr,b. Selection and Admission of participants The participants will be selected based on their pre-requisite qualifications and first come first serve basis. However, female participants will get preference. Only selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone. The admission of participants will be confirmed only when the fee is received. Certification After successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a certificate of participation.
