Hands on Training for Special School Teachers & Professionals: Managing Feeding Problems and Mouth/ Oral Sensory Difficulties

Introduction Children with special needs (eg.autism, CP, ADHD etc.) are often at increased risk for developing feeding difficulties. Studies have shown that up to 80% of children with developmental disabilities have feeding problems at some point, and that could include oral-motor or oral-sensory difficulties. Hypo or hyposensitivity to stimuli, gag, grimace, poor oral-motor coordination, aversive feeding behaviors etc comprise significant obstacles to growth and threaten clinical stability. In the daily care, caregivers often face these problems that sometimes result in frustration. Objectives of the course After successful completion, the participants will be in a better position to: • Understand difficulties leading to feeding problems • Learn how to assess oral sensory and oral-motor difficulties • Learn how to treat oral sensory and oral-motor difficulties • Remediating feeding difficulties through specific protocols • Intervention for oral-sensory and oral-motor through multiple therapy approaches Course Structure The training program is designed with lectures, interactive discussions, group and individual exercise that focus on management of feeding problems and oral sensory-motor difficulties at work place. It is a 2 daylong course which will begin at 8:30 am and close by 4:30 pm. Target Participants • Special School Teachers • Physicians and allied health professionals • Paraprofessionals • ABA Therapists • Physiotherapists may apply if working with children with Autism Lead Facilitator: Ms. Malvika Samnani, the Founder Director of SOCH India, has been leading a multi-disciplinary team which includes occupational therapists, special educators, speech therapists, play therapists, physiotherapists, neurodevelopmental therapists, psychologists since 2007. She is an MSc in Occupational Therapy and awarded gold medal for her outstanding performance. Ms. Malvika is certified in Oral Placement Therapy for feeding and speech clarity from USA. She is an experienced facilitator and conducts trainings, workshops, seminars at home and abroad. Co-facilitators: Faculties from icddr,b and faith Bangladesh. Course fee The course fee is BDT 8000 (Eight Thousand Taka) only. How to Pay? The preferred method of payment is Online using Credit or Debit Card or Mobile Banking (e.g. BKash, DBBL). However, participants can also make payment directly to Technical Training Unit at icddr,b. Selection and Admission of participants The participants will be selected based on their pre-requisite qualifications and first come first serve basis. However, female participants will get preference. Only selected participants will be notified by email or SMS or over telephone. The admission of participants will be confirmed only when the fee is received. Certification After successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a certificate of participation.
