Training on ADOS-2 Assessment Tool for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Background

Precise, evidence-informed evaluation lies at the heart of identifying and diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), stands as one of the internationally recognized gold-standard for observational assessment  for evaluating social communication, interaction, play, and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior linked to ASD.

In response to this need, faith Bangladesh is launching a dedicated training program aimed at building professionals' capacity to administer, score, and interpret the ADOS-2 with confidence. The course will address ADOS-2 Modules 1 and 2, along with the Toddler Module. Modules 3 and 4 fall outside the scope of this training — Module 4 applies solely to adult individuals with ASD, while Module 3 involves cultural considerations that have not yet been validated within the Bangladeshi context. Blending theoretical grounding with hands-on practice, this intensive program is designed to strengthen participants' overall competence in autism evaluation.

Course Description and Objectives

This professional training program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the ADOS-2 assessment tool and its application in clinical, educational, and research setting.

Participants will:

• Understand the theoretical foundations and structure of ADOS-2.
• Learn the administration procedures for the ADOS-2 — Modules 1, 2, and the Toddler Module.
• Master the precise pacing, specific play routines and standardized press prompts needed to elicit social-communicative behaviors without over-prompting.
• Gain expertise in using the operational definitions for behavioral codes (0,1,2,3,…).
• Practice identifying core features across both diagnostic domains; Social Affect (SA) and Restricted & Repetitive Behaviour (RRB)
• learn the mechanics of transferring raw diagnostic codes into the specific ADOS-2 Algorithm sheets
• Understand how to compute overall totals, map cut-off and interpret the final standardized ADOS-2 classifications (Autism, Autism Spectrum or Non Spectrum/Ranges of Concern for the Toddler Module
• Learn how to accurately map direct behavioral observations onto the exact diagnostic criteria for ASD.
• Understand and interpret the basic Psychometric support for ADOS -2.
• Gain knowledge of interpretation and report writing.

Enhance confidence in utilizing ADOS-2 as part of a multidisciplinary evaluation process.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Conduct standardized administration procedure, codding and scoring.
• Select the most appropriate ADOS-2 modules based on a child’s chronological age and expressive language levels
• Understands that an ADOS classification is never a standalone diagnosis. The expected outcome is for clinicians to blend these observations alongside parent histories and multidisciplinary team evaluations.
• Understand “Ethical considerations” and best practices in ASD assessment.
• Understand upon completing a basic ADOS clinical  training course, they are expected to achieve specific baseline professional competencies which does not grant immediate clinical or research reliability. It provides the foundation for supervised practice.
• Understand that, an effective post-course practice and Supervision framework bridge the gap between completing a  basic workshop and achieving reliable  clinical competency before working solo and to avoid "clinical drift".

Chapter 2: Clinical Reliability

Certification Process

We are pleased to announce the guideline for the official certificate of the upcoming ADOS -2 Training workshop.

Certification Criteria : Attending the workshop is the first and foundational step. To receive official certification as an independent, calibrated ADOS-2 user, all participants must successfully complete a rigorous Post-Course Evaluation Phase.

 To earn certification, your independent scores must achieve a mathematical Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) of 80% or greater exact agreement when cross-referenced with the certified trainer’s master algorithm.

The official ADOS-2 User Certificate will be strictly awarded exclusively only to those who successfully complete and achieve the required clinical reliability benchmarks during the post-course evaluation phase.

The Graduation Ceremony: To acknowledge your dedication, hard work and significant professional milestone and celebrate this prestigious achievement, the official certificate distribution will be presented in a grand, formal Closing Ceremony.

This ceremony will serve as a wonderful platform to network with fellow clinicians and mark your step into independent certified practice. Further details regarding the post-course timelines and the ceremony schedule will be provided during the workshop.
